THE KINGDOM OF ANIMALS IN MEDA’S NORBUTAITĖ’S MYSTERY

The balance is the penalty of being human: the danger of allowing yourself to feel. On one side we have the descent into animalism, on the other a godhead delusion. Both pulling at us, both tempting. But without these forces tugging at your psyche, stirring it into conflict, you can never love. They awaken us, you see, they arouse our passion.
Peter F. Hamilton

Abstract
Environmental philosophy mostly describes views of the blessed unity of natural community stressing the continuity of humanity with wider nature and our harmonic membership in that. It seems that a non-anthropocentric philosophy requires that we identify ourselves with nature and thereby minimize human/non-human distinction.
Our essay is focused on Meda’s Norbutaitė’s painting. The creation of a Lithuanian artist is connected by long-term ties with the theme of her own vision of an animal in an inseparable connection with a person.
Keywords:  anthropological machine, animal rights, cruelty, melancholia, non-anthropocentric philosophy, wilderness.

Introduction
The growing presence of animals in contemporary art is a mark of ecological, cultural, mentalistic, and linguistic change. The opposition of culture and nature, human and non-human doesn’t seem to make much sense any longer. Environmental philosophy mostly describes views of the blessed unity of natural community stressing the continuity of humanity with wider nature and our harmonic membership in that. It seems that a non-anthropocentric philosophy requires that we identify ourselves with nature and thereby minimize human/non-human distinction. An alternative view more plausible stresses that the distinction between humanity and nature is valued precisely for its otherness. If nature is valued in virtue of its otherness, it is best thought of as an extrinsic, final, and objective good, where the objectivity of nature’s value is a method of understanding, describing, and visualization. The Holmes Rolston view, “environments are horizons that we carry about and reconstitute as we move here and there. Objectively, there are no horizons in nature” (Rolston 1997: 39).

In search of philosophical approach
This essay is focused on Lithuanian artist Meda’s Norbutaitė’s painting. Her creation demonstrates long-term ties with the theme of her own vision of an animal and its complicated connection with a human being.  Norbutaitė represents domestic animals, that have been bred and adapted over generations to live alongside humans – calves and bulls, sheep and pigs, horses and dogs, or wild animals that live aside humans – rats, pigeons, crows, etc. Over many centuries these animals served as a means for human survival: as a workforce, food, material for clothes, etc. Norbutaitė’s animal representations are embedded in a special illogical, irrational, and surreal visual narrative. It combines the extraordinary expression of archaic and postmodern visual forms with inter-civilizational religious images and symbols, the history of their pictorial representation, and places them into a contemporary context. The artist likes grotesque and irony. She plays with visual and semantic contrasts or metaphors and combines them into one pictorial representation of superficial beauty (aestheticism) and ugliness. Norbutaitė’s paintings include such oppositions as archaic and postmodern, ethnic/individual and universal, sacral/religious and domestic/everyday life, and sophisticated and rough images. This combination reveals an unexpected image, that emerged from contemporary individual associations and ancient narratives of civilizational cultural memory.

Massumi about the animal continuum. The continuum is a continuous sequence in which adjacent elements are not perceptibly different from each other, although the extremes are quite distinct. In the book What Animals Teach Us about Politics, Brian Massumi has developed the idea of the human as an animal. This idea served as a basis for his conception of animal politics. Massumi integrates the dominant evolutionary biology and philosophy such notions as play, sympathy, and creativity, which enrich the concept of nature. His inquiry includes not only animal behavior but also animal thought with its apartness or proximity to, those capacities which human beings claim a monopoly: language and reflexive consciousness. Massumi argues that all that is special to the human (language and writing) is not what separates us from animals, it is not denote “the” animal a “pure” and vital expression of our animality” (Massumi, 2014: 59). The animal continuum “must be done in a way that does not erase what is different about the human, but respects that difference while bringing it to the new expression on the continuum: immanent to animality. Expressing the singular belonging of the human to the animal continuum has political implications, as do all questions of belonging” (Massumi. 2014: 3).
He concludes that a matrix of identity is not only way to divide animals from humans:

“The species converge not through a matrix of identity (“the” animal, “the” human), but through the speeds and slowness of ecologies. Thinking this way perhaps allows us to consider how fields of resonance through the coexistence not of identity structures (the human, the self) but through ecologies that are as many rhythms as “beings”. The point is not that there is no identity – no human, no animal, no plant – but that the species is not where the process begins or ends. Our proposition is not to negate species or identity, but to become aware that the force of collective individuation happens in the interstices where the ecologies are still in active transformation” (Massumi 2012).

Wilderness and protection of animal interest. The definition of wilderness is important for our research. This notion has connotations, which specifically reflect the values of the late 20th and a myth of the urbane style of life and behaviour. Wilderness is one of the keywords for seeing and understanding nature and animals. The relation with wilderness included such polar attitudes as pragmatism, gambling, competition, and satisfying hunger. At the same time, the desire to avoid unnecessary infliction of pain and aesthetic enjoyment of its harmony and beauty. The conventional definition of wildness in a European context is following:

“Wild areas have a high level of predominance of natural process and natural habitat. They tend to be individually smaller and more fragmented than wilderness areas, although they often cover extensive tracts. The condition of their natural habitat, processes and relevant species is however often partially or substantially modified by human activities such as livestock herding, hunting, fishing, forestry, sport activities or general imprint of human artifacts.” (Wild Europe 2015).

Animal rights theories and practice. Animal rights theories are most commonly grounded on animal interests. These theories are naturally connected with the common theory of human and non-human rights. With its mostly emphasis on well-being rather than on agency, the interest theory seems more open and deeper to the possibility of animal rights from the outset. Modern animal welfare by legislation cannot be explained only then animals are part of wilderness and harmony in nature but from the reason that the animals it protects have morally and legally relevant rights and interests, in their welfare, life, health, and physical or mental integrity. For this reason, reducing the level of cruelty is one of the more visible sides to protecting animal interests in every stage of its life (from birth to death).

Nowadays evolutionary biology, ethology, literature, theory of art, and philosophy try to re-evaluate the human-animal relation from a post-humanist perspective. This approach has entailed not only developing a more nuanced image of animal behaviour but changing the vision of the knowledge itself subject which is endowed with language and reflexive consciousness. Work of art specifically questions the boundaries between nature and culture. This persistent presence of animals in visual art expressed some kind of sign of our involvement, it constitutes our return to early expelling feelings. Karen Andersen named this “to make its absence more bearable” (Andersen and Bochicchio 2007: 14).

Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka believe that the change of paradigm is so important in human–non–human relations in perspective would mean the end to the hierarchy and expanding the framework of animal rights. In their book Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights, philosophers offered a new approach to the theory and practice of animal rights. Donaldson and Kymlicka imagine the animal as a “political animal” and show, that different types of animals are in different relationships with the human community. From domesticated animals that have full members of human-animal mixed communities, participating in the cooperative project of shared citizenship to wild animals that form their own sovereign communities which need to be protected from such typical human political events and process colonization, war, invasion, domination and other threats for animal existence. (Donaldson and Kymlicka 2011). Agamben’s anthropological machine. The intersection of contemporary art, posthumanism, and critical animal studies emerged new fields to rethink the boundaries and relationships between non-human animals and humans and becomes a source for reconceptualizing non-human agency and being. Giorgio Agamben describes this process as becoming of “anthropological machine”, the various cultural, scientific, and philosophical discourses used to distinguish humans and animals through a dual process of inclusion and exclusion. (Agamben 2004).
At the very core of such interaction was the human need for a dialogue with the alterity and the beginning of an acceptance path of a non-exclusiveness of human existence. During one generation open of the decline of anthropocentrism becomes part of a new post-humanistic approach and a new vision of relations between the worlds of animals and human society.

Agamben anthropological machine, “the outside is produced through the exclusion of an inside and the inhuman produced by animalizing the human, the inside is obtained through the inclusion of outside, and the non-man is produced by the humanization of an animal: above all the slave, the barbarian, and the foreigner, as figures of an animal in human form”. (Agamben 2004: 37)

Agamben’s anthropological machine is multifunctional:
• it provides a means of determining who counts, and who does not, for all animals, whether human or nonhuman;
• it deploys ascriptions of animality to include or exclude humans;
• it assigns apparent similarities with, and differences from, humans, in order to subject nonhuman animals to judgments of worth and entitlement;
• bestia sacer, the excluded nonhuman animal, is contained in zones of exception outside the protection of the law.

Derrida and paradigm of animal deconstruction. Derrida deconstructed the anthropocentric philosophical view that incessantly divides the supposedly unique human from what is so crudely and violently called “the Animal,” and insisted instead that were cognize and respond to the difference and multiplicity of the living. Leading Derridean The Animal That Therefore I Am reminds us of the place of animals in the history of different religious and philosophical traditions by asserting that animal has been quite intentionally excluded from them. According to him, this exclusion is already at work in the creation of the very word animal (animot). This word is composed of the word “animal” and the French word “mot” for underlining our non- wishes to belong “to every living being that we are not, and do not want to be”. (Derrida 2008: 41) According to Derrida, the promotion of this view in human history was eternally founded upon acts such as forgetting, mourning, repression, even violence, and the denial of the animality of human beings, leading to a denial of their mortality. The more important results of his philosophical explanation and relation to the animal situation in human society were:

• human beings indeed have a nature, which deconstruction promises to reveal, demonstrating human-non-human essence,
• the singular cruelty of the relationship between human beings and animals;
its eternal denial of the unprecedented proportions of this subjection of the animal,
•  men do all they can in order to dissimulate this cruelty or to hide it from themselves; in order to organize on a global scale, the forgetting or misunderstanding of this violence.

Derrida uses such strong meaning as “genocide” according to animals but at the same time, warns against too literal and frequent use of it.
Environmental being and language. The language we speak about our environment affects our relationship with nature and animals. Often language denotes our power over nature and speaks about plants and animals mostly in terms of consumption. By developing how we speak about nature, we can better and deeper understand how interconnected we are. The general criterium of difference between the human and non-human world is language or its absence. From the view of Richard Rorty, “the idea that we all have an overriding obligation to diminish cruelty . . . seems to take for granted that there is something within human beings which deserves respect and protection quite independently of the language they speak. It suggests that a nonlinguistic ability, the ability to feel pain, is what is important. (Rorty 1991: 88) Rorthy argues, that “pain is nonlinguistic: It is what we human beings have that ties us to the nonlanguage-using beasts”. (Rorty 1991: 94).

Walter Benjamin in their essay On Language as Such and on the Language of Man created a global, universalistic vision of language as such and claims that everything has its own language, and a mode of communication by words is only a tiny piece of a metaphysical entity of language. The question of the existence of a language of things and non-human beings starts to be the general point of his philosophy of language. It tried to connect nature, man, and God together through language and its meanings. the ‘medium’ of communication”. For him, human beings transfer all the diversity of the world and its relations “in language and not through language” (Benjamin 1996: 63-64).
Some researchers following this general idea look continued it until “that the man plays the role of a translator, who can give a name to things and get ‘beyond himself’ by gaining knowledge of things, and finally translate this knowledge to a God”. (Barvinska 2014).

Visual arts as a territory of human and animal interconnection. Nowadays most animalists and supporters of contemporary biotech art radically disagree with Jakob von Uexküll’s motto that “No animal can enter into relation with an object as such”. Through such direction as “zones of indeterminacy” is visible animal-human collaboration.  Elias remarks that “indeterminacy or indiscernibility opens up a productive space in which to rethink the status of the Anthropos that underpins the category of the aesthetic”. (Elias 2019). Through jungle zones of indeterminacy, contemporary artists create a visual image of the plurality variants of animal relations with an object as such including human beings, culture, and nature. From J. Marie Griggs view, disruptive practices of violence, injustice, and degradation “coexist with rupturing practices of beauty, recovery, and life means recovery cannot exist without being situated within an understanding of violence. Distinctive moments, sometimes dynamic and sometimes ordinary, accumulate into an embodied understanding, that is necessary for a full aesthetic experience” (Griggs, 2013: 74).

Karin Andersen as an artist and scholar argues, that “the opposition of culture and nature – deeply rooted in anthropocentric and humanistic visions of the world – doesn’t seem to make much sense any longer”. (Andersen and Bochicchio 2012: 13). It means that “the animal is the real and unacknowledged star of the contemporary art system” (Ibidem). This situation should answer one of the key important questions: “Might contemporary art that engages with animals allow the differences and connections between species to be understood outside of an entrenched division between culture and nature or between the art institution and what it contains?” (Elias 2019). Andersen and Bochicchio found four variations to the understanding of the animal role in contemporary art:
• multimedia animal portrait: representation as such focused exclusively on the
animal’s identity, body, or eyes.
• animal simulacrum and element of a metaphorical narrative.
• ritual use of dead animals: a sacrifice capable to purify human beings through artist-shaman mediation.
• presence of living animals in the artwork: the use of living animals is often connected to ritual works and to the metaphoric representation. (Andersen and Bochicchio 2012:17)

The numerous examples of the presence of animals as spectators or actors or players in the art institution remind us of what Donna Haraway describes as a ‘becoming-with’ other species or an acknowledgment of “the flourishing of significant otherness” (Haraway 2003:3). The important first point of the current debate on the post-humanistic identity is no longer considered as deactivation from the “Other.” Generally, socio-cultural approach to contemporary visual arts allows us to understand that the animal presence in arts is stronger during these historical periods when human identity is questioned and becomes the subject of deconstruction. The second point is associated with to what extent the “uneasy looking” is necessary for artworks that are in a different way related to animals. In edition. contemporary artists are increasingly focused on the differentiated mechanisms of interaction between the human and animal spheres through such emotions as melancholia, sadness, longing, pleasure, joy, and fear.

Meda’s Norbutaitė’s magic partnership with animal otherness
The inspiring and provocative artistic image of the animal. Lithuanian philosopher Gintautas Mažeikis poetically defined Meda’s Norbutaitė’s painting as “moderately surrealistic, postmodern associating baroque and Peter Paul Rubens, which seeks to reveal the energies of the spirit, purification, and sacrifice of the soul, encourages overcoming the stagnation of the spirit and rising with the birds” (Mažeikis 2020:249). Norbutaitė’s human and non-human images have a special emotional expression and artistic language. The pictorial representation of the animal becomes a visual metaphor and a mediator between the animal prototype, the artist, and the viewer. Through animal images, the artist speaks mostly about people, their relationships, social stereotypes, emotions, habits, and behaviour. At the same time, Norbutaitė appeals to the level of knowledge about nature with culture through such products of human spiritual activity as mythology, religious texts and the rituals described in them, parables, and legends.
The artist creates an inspiring and provocative image of animal essence and existing thoughts on the depicted topic.  Sometimes, there is a feeling that the above-mentioned theories, conceptions, fears, and pessimism of present and future environmental disasters, the conflict between new environmental ethics and pragmatism have passed her. However, this initial feeling fades as we gaze longer into depicted images of animals. We discover for ourselves what we have already seen, known, experienced in childhood, or noticed quite recently. The artist seeks to convey the current de-romanticized state and image of a human being who lives here and now, for whom the animal world is clearly divided into fetishized pets and those who are the supplier of daily food. Norbutaitė’s artworks reveal a few phases of her relationship with the animalistic subject. This relationship was changing over twenty years.

Around 2010 Norbutaitė’s animal drawing is characterized by new opportunities for creative reflections on the common existence of human beings and animals in the shared living space. During this period, she paid a lot of attention to the plastic expression, colours, shapes, and factures.
Later Norbutaitė was interested in symbolic meaning. She had the intention to create narratives related to human-non-human inner states. Since 2013 she has started the search for a symbolic union to convey aspects of political or social criticism. Recently, the subject of the animal has become a suitable object for considering a few main aspects. Firstly, it is meant to reflect on the current environmental problems of the world through which cruelty to animals is in different forms. On the other hand, it is meant for contemplation about social problems.
It should be emphasized, that Norbutaitė uses a double manner of painting, in which human images are not finished and, on the contrary, animal images are carefully depicted. Aesthetics of non finito (not finished) as a mode of artistic expression and a unique dynamic are clearly visible in paintings of human beings. At the same time, animal images are carefully painted in detail. The artist offers to look at animals as if we are seeing them for the first time.

The journey through the Orwellian seven Commandments. The Seven Commandments in George’s Orwell’s Animal Farm (1945) are as follows: “Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. No animal shall wear clothes. No animal shall sleep in a bed. No animal shall drink alcohol. No animal shall kill any other animal. All animals are equal” (Orwell, 2001, p. 21). Let’s travel to Meda Norbutaitė’s animal imagery!

Animal images represent different layers of social life and human behaviour, in which the human body itself turns into an animal body. This idea further expanded the range of her creative tasks. The artist chooses for herself reincarnation as a state of mind and body in a moment of life crisis and existential tragedy. Norbutaitė represents the image of human reincarnation into an animal as retribution for arrogance and enjoyment of power. The dehumanization of body and soul through this way of incarnation is the judgment (just as human beings have to die once, but after this comes judgment, Hebrews 9:27). It means a verdict, that has already taken place without the right to pardon. The human part of the body is worthy of pink colour, becoming an animal only an indefinite brown colour. This painting indicates, that the loss of human appearance is not a metaphor or a conditional expression, but rather a literal dehumanization of subjectivity.

The Golden Calf, 2016

Several works of the painter allude to the biblical narrative with reference to contemporary consumerism. Her painting The Golden Calf (2016) represents the image of an injured bull, who might be perceived as a consequence of humanity’s overestimation of material goods. At the first glance, this image of a wounded and crippled animal should evoke in the viewer such emotions as compassion, pity, or anger. The title of the picture summarizes the main idea of this work. It guides us to the symbolic meaning of a calf as a cult image, that is found in the biblical narrative. God told Moses about the Israelites, who quickly deviated from the path, that God commanded them, and began to worship the Golden Calf. There are many interpretations of this narrative in literature, arts, and popular culture. Among these works can be mentioned Charles Gounod’s opera Faust (1859) and the famous Méphistophélès’s aria The Golden Calf is still standing. The golden calf here is the symbol of universal cupidity. Norbutaitė’s animal is fallen down and blood like rubies pours from the wounds. The image gives hope, that human cupidity can be overcome.

Meda’s inspirations. In an interview, Meda Norbutaitė noted, that almost the biggest inspiration for the animal imagery was Damien Hirst’s creative thinking. The British artist has combined aestheticism with the maximally provocative idea of representation. It should be mentioned, that Hirst also reflected this topic in his controversial artwork The Golden Calf (2008). The calf was put in formaldehyde, with hooves, horns, and the disk of goddess Hathor between its 18-carat gold horns. It was sold as a real golden calf in Sotheby’s for the hefty sum of 10 million pounds. Kieran Cashell contends that Hirst’s works compel us to feel “humiliation and guilt for the instrumental and systematic abuse of those that deserve our care <…> it necessarily evokes an emotional response that activates the ‘sympathy’ associated with the ethics of care to provoke our fundamental compassion for the animal-as-other” (Cashell, 2009, p. 175). However, Norbutaitė’s interpretation of this subject confirms the main idea of Hirst’s opponents: “the intention to unmask the corruptibility/corporeality/animality of human beings can only be fulfilled when this sort of unbearable real is, to a certain extent, masked” (Huang, 2015, p. 110).

The Still Life of Eyes is a provocative invitation to look into the eyes of domestic animals when they are served in the form of dishes. Five plates with heads of pig, sheep, bull, horse, and goat are placed on a table, covered with a red (maybe blooded?) tablecloth. Folded cutlery and red rubies like blood drops testify that something terrible has happened just now. This picture also reminds an iconography of the biblical narrative about the mission of John the Baptist. The preacher was sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded by Herod Antipas, when the daughter of Herodias Salome asked him to bring John’s head. Salome bearing John’s head on a platter became a popular subject, especially in the Baroque painting. This biblical narrative was depicted several times by Dutch painters Rembrandt and Peter Rubens. Their paintings always were a creative source for Norbutaitė’s imaginary world and she fills Christian iconography with new content – contemporary issues of animal ethics.

Sometimes Norbutaitė’s animals represent sacrifice, which means “purifying” from sinful passions. In this sense, it acts as an important tool or element of ritual action. In the other case, the dual symbolism means the sacred innocence of the animal that from religious canon ready for human meals (Paganism, Judaism, and Islam). The general atmosphere of the painting The Sacrifice is multifaceted. Looking at the picture we are feeling the purifying sacralization and ritualization of collective action, the desire to create an image of a pseudo-living lamb that is conveniently located in a gilded baptistry. Beads of small rubies are a simulacrum behind which a spicy pomegranate is hidden. In front of our eyes, a pure concentration of sacrum and profanum appears in one image.

The Blue Blood II, 2016

The Pink Head, 2021

The mystery of the blue blood. Norbutaitė’s paintings depict various domestic animals that are closely related to traditional agriculture and farming, production of meat and milk. She represents images of sheep, pigs, horses, poultry, bulls, and birds. An image of a pig in her paintings appears around 2014. The pig as a symbol had negative connotations in Judeo-Christian tradition. It is an unclean domestic animal and “it seems, served in part to define in consciousness a boundary between the civilized and the uncivilized, the refined and the unrefined <…> The pig highlighted what should be avoided” (Malcolmson and Mastoris, 1998). The two most renowned literary pigs are Napoleon and Snowball in Orwell’s Animal Farm. Actually, they are really not pigs at all – they are personifications of totalitarian state agents. Norbutaitė follows the same symbolism. Her pictures The Change of Mind (2021), The Blue Blood Carrier (2019), The Blue Blood I (2014), The Blue Blood II (2016), The Pink Head (2021) are pictorial reflections of human behaviour. Historically the word blood has references to family ties – people you are related to sharing the same blood. The notion of blue blood is a reference to a special social category with high social status – aristocrats. La noblesse is a privileged and noble family, that is wealthy and powerful. Norbutaitė’s paintings are questioning this traditional understanding of blue blood and la noblesse. Who is the contemporary elite? Those people, who are publicly visible in the media, are really the elite? Or maybe, the glossy surface hides only simply swinish unrefined nature? We look at the head of the blue pig in a plate or at the head of the pink pig on a dark blue background. In the other picture, the blue pig takes a bath, and colour, that masked her body, turns the water blue showing the true “pink” swinish essence. Another blue pig is looking hopefully at its reflection in the mirror trying to see its own beauty while its “colleague” moves away in the depth of the picture.

In recent years new species appear in Norbutaitė’s painting: monkeys, rabbits, or hares. Through monkey images, the painter reflects social circus and affectation (The Banana Sun, 2022 and The Clownery. Identity Searches, 2022). Smiling, mocking, posing, or imitating monkeys are strong metaphors for human social behaviour. Visibility, conspicuity, imitation, and following are the main principles of contemporary hyper-spectacle society. Sometimes monkey’s vital animal nature overcomes human tiredness and weakness. The image of a naked flabby human body wearing a joker cap and holding a humming top in a hand contrast with the image of a strong patronizing monkey (The Banana Sun).
How to stay in an imperfect world (conclusion). Norbutaitė reflects on these social themes in her work in recent years. Her animal representations are embedded in a special illogical and sometimes surreal visual narrative. A combination of archaic and postmodern visual forms with inter-civilizational religious images and symbols, “baroque” artistic manner, and contemporary content create a particular imaginary Meda’s Norbutaitė’s world. Grotesque and irony, the play of visual and semantic contrasts, and metaphors make her painting polysemantic and open to different interpretations. Oppositions of archaic vs postmodern, individual vs universal, sacral/religious vs domestic/everyday life, and sophisticated vs rough reveal an unexpected image, that emerged from contemporary individual associations and ancient narratives of civilizational cultural memory.

À PROPOS DE LA CRÉATION DE MEDA NORBUTAITÈ

Christian Noorbergen

A LOOK BACK AT LITHUANIAN ARTISTS IN PARIS

Christian Noorbergen, March 23, 2023

In 2019, superb Lithuanian artists had already enchanted Paris, and the excellent magazine Miroir de l’Art spoke of the exhibition as “one of the freshest and most awakening that we have seen in Paris”. The experience has just been renewed in the same superb Espace Commines, under the aegis of Edvidas Zukas, with a beautiful title, “Le Loup de Fer”.

The exhibition has just ended, but the many visitors will remember it for a long time, and the next one is already expected, perhaps at the next Lille fair… Julija Palmeirao was the curator. Note that French artists are often invited to Lithuania, from Manu Rich to Olivier de Sagazan, from Serge Labégorre to Marc Petit.

Lithuania, with a tremendous artistic health, is thirsty for openness and its artists have nothing to envy to the Western sizes that it knows and greatly appreciates. It is even very fortunately preserved from the fabricated artifices of a certain sometimes invasive modernity… All the registers of creation are present, in an extreme aesthetic openness: painting, video, sculpture and photography offer a striking palette of creations of deep authenticity. Each artist invents his own language and his own art effects. Freedom guaranteed!

Other artists came, including the very powerful Meda Norbutaité, with a staggering pictorial presence. The rough painted designs of Egle Kuckaité have been rightly noticed, like the fine paintings of Linas Jusionis, the impressive photographs of Antenas Sutkus, Imantas Selenis and Tadas Cern, the singular and joyful sculptures of Mykolas Saukas. We must also mention: Nerijus Erminas, Inga Galinyté, Patricija Jurksaityté, Mykolas Sauka, Andra Vau, and the quartet composed by B. Tilmantaité, N. Rekasuité, R. Meilutyté and A. Striuzé.

All these artists are from Vilnius, one of the beautiful cities of Europe, which celebrated in this exhibition the 700th anniversary of its Foundation.

MEDA NORBUTAITĖ’S CARTOGRAPHY OF BODY AND SOUL

Basia Nikiforova, Žilvinė Gaižutytė-Filipavičienė

“Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.” (Anthony Bourdain)

“I have said that the soul is not more than the body,
And I have said that the body is not more than the soul, And nothing, not God, is greater to one than one’s-self is” (Walt Whitman)

In contemporary visual culture, the body is visualized as a symbol and image of all crises – migration, pandemics, ecological and other global disasters: It is the vulnerability of the body that has become a major theme and source of artistic activism.

Personality

Lithuanian painter
is an artist who actively creates and organizes exhibitions. Since 1997 she has participated in more than twenty author exhibitions, many group exhibitions and projects. 2020 The album “Meda Norbutaitė” was published in 2010, in which the best works of the painter of the last two decades were collected, accompanied by texts by art critics and art philosophers, and in the summer of 2020, an author’s exhibition was held at the Artists’ Union Gallery. The painter is interested in a material body that has its own scope, shape, texture, color, smell and moods, and at the same time accommodates emotional and spiritual experiences and thoughts. Painters care about the bodily presence in the world and the relationship of the bodily self to the environment.

World Artistic influences

The manner of painting is related to the mastery of old Dutch painting, which can be seen in the works of Jan Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Willem Claesz Heda. We can also mention the 19th century. painters Gustave Moreau, August Renoir, Claude Monet, and the twentieth century. early Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele, whose influences can be seen in Meda’s paintings.

Vilnius Hipsters. Oil on canvas. 2019

Domestic artistic influences

Searching for connections with the Lithuanian painting tradition is also possible to mention the 20th century as one of the visual influences: Lithuanian photography school of the second half – photographs by Antanas Sutkus or Rimantas Dichavičius. On the other hand, the painting style of Meda Norbutaitė is related to the works of Ričardas Filistovičius or partly Henrikas Natalevičius It is characterized by illusory images intertwined with metaphors, paradoxes, symbols, quotes or hints, supplemented by sarcasm or irony. A free stroke that melts the specificity of forms, a play of light and darkness accompanies the scenes of Meda’s paintings.

The object, matter and tool

“The body is the first and most natural human instrument. Or more precisely, if we do not talk about the instrument, the body is the first and most natural technical object of man, and at the same time a technical means”. French ethnologist Marcel Mauss. [1]

“Your body is not for itself. Also, I should add, not just mine. It is shrouded in the world of pharmacy, aerobics, diet, liposuction, calorie-controlled, cyber postmodernism. The body has become a major object in both academia and the wider culture” we see a less aestheticized, crippled, aging, sick, or decaying body. Video culture theorist Nicolas Mirzoeff. [2]

“The body means a living concrete, material, living structure of body, organs, nerves, muscles and skeleton, given unity, harmony and structure only through its physical and social purpose … and harmonious whole. The body is organically / biologically / naturally „incomplete” … and requires social activation, management and long-term

„management”. Feminist theorist Elisabeth Grosz [3]
The bodies are not „full” or filled, but like open space … Bodies are places of existence, and there is no place without place, without „here” a „here it is” (voici) for or (ceci). Body-space is neither full nor empty, there is neither external nor internal, there are no more parts, no whole, no functions, there is no finality”. The French philosopher Jean-Lucas Nancy. [4]

This observation that „there is no finality” provides a variety of body imaging options for visual arts creators. The problems of body visibility are explained by the social nature of the body, the performative features of the body, and the abilities that are constantly shaped by the social environment.

Spring, summer, autumn, winter … and spring again

In Meda Norbutaitė’s work we see various stages of human bodily development and developmental cycles – babies („Connection”, 2018), children and adolescents („Porcelain”, 2018) flowering and mature male and female bodies („In Public”, 2019), and images of the aging human body (Virgin Butterfly, 2019). The works unfold the beginning of a person’s bodily connection with the world, the physical change of the body, the changes in the relationship with the world and oneself become a counterweight to the prevailing consumer approach to the body. The attitude towards the woman’s body and its visual research brings Meda closer to those Lithuanian artists for whom reflections on personal experience and aspects of a woman’s identity are important – research on birth, maturation, maturity, motherhood and her own body.

Art critic Virginija Vitkienė emphasizes that “works analyzing the world of women and problematic works in this field were created and exhibited in both group and personal exhibitions of artists, but feminism as a long-term and conscious or politically engaged strategy of creative thinking and action was not chosen by any Lithuanian artist or group of artists”.[5] In general, the features and problems of Western feminism in the works of Lithuanian artists (the position of a female creator, other than male female self-expression, gender equality,

professional discrimination, the creation / shaping of a woman’s image in classical art and contemporary art) are not clear. One could only recall that in recent years this issue has arisen in the film industry and has been linked to the Me Too movement.

The formation of a refined body, attention to physical beauty and external elegance is determined by the norms of modern society and culture on which the aestheticization of social life is based. Men is „encouraged” to engage in sports activities, forced to improve the body and woman strives for the ideal of leanness, as well as to continually combat the aging of the body – „signs of aging” – and the demonstration of the old body, which boldly reminds everyone of its fragility and completeness.

„A well-shaped and disciplined body reflects a successful person who has the will, energy and self-control – a person whose attitudes are appropriate, who takes care of himself and what he looks like to others,” Meda Norbutaitė (M. N.) [6]

The flow of images of a beautiful and aesthetic body, flooding in from various media, “causes greater dissatisfaction with one’s body. The visual image is becoming predominant in Western culture, where youthful appearance is especially valued.” These social and cultural images and norms affect women more than men, as the „value” of a woman’s body is determined by the economy of admiration and seduction. Although a man seems
to be freed from this worry – the aging of his body does not obscure or suppress personal charm, many scholars note that in recent years the aesthetic criteria of a beautiful woman and a man’s body have become similar and the images of masculinity have changed.

„I like every kind of body, I like to paint it, the body is visually attractive, textures, shapes … It is interesting
to draw and paint the body, but with the body I express a message about the soul and spiritual personal experiences. My circle of friends is very diverse from the age of twenty-seven to eighty-four – we touch personal topics of the body with them <…>, but this topic touches mostly personal inner world”. (M N.)

Virgin Butterfly. Oil on canvas. 2019

The sensuality of painting

Meda Norbutaitė’s painting has special sensory properties. We can perceive the bodies of men and women depicted in her works not only with a glance, but also feel the warmth, vibration or smell they emit. One could mention such works as “Three Beloved” (2020), “Gray” (2018), “Virgin Butterfly” (2019), “Schoolgirl” (2018), “Artist’s Nude” (2019), “Three” (2019).

“Painting is probably the most sensual of all the arts. And not only because we see a painting (after all, in a sense we see both poetry and even music that evokes in us some images visible through the „eyes of the soul”), but also because the painting is a sensually individualized, objectively existing object. In addition, it depicts sensually individualized objects.” Arvydas Šliogeris. [7]

Meda ‚s plastic expression is characterized by a special tactility, in which the stroke and texture are important – the moment of the artist’s touch with the canvas. The painter depicts real and unadorned bodies in the works “Blue Blood Bearer” (2019), “Gray” (2018), “Contact” (2019), “Virgin Butterfly” (2019). For her, human age is an individual, an experience and an opportunity for wisdom, and an old, wrinkled and flabby body is the visible and fixed history of the individual’s soul. The bodies of babies, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly emerging in Meda’s paintings are like islands of authentic existence and experience.

She, using the mastered Rembrandian chiaroscuro technique (light changes), opens the human body emerging from darkness. The radiant figure reveals the individuality of the depicted model and tells the story of her life. It can be said that it is the opening of being and life experience through the special prism of optics.

“Being is always material. The problem of being coincides with the problem of man’s openness to the object. The materiality of being is determined by the metaphysical nature of man. Because man is a finite being, he is himself an object, and at the same time, opening to what is not himself, he is also attached to things.” Arvydas Šliogeris. [8]

In Public. Oil on canvas. 2019

Leaving to the Imagination

Meda Norbutaitė’s body images are characterized by a special emotional and emotional expression, in which the images are like mediums. The image of the body becomes like a mediator between the artist and the viewer. Of course, always talking about the naked body and its image in art leads to questions of sensuality and eroticism. Looking at Meda ‚s works, we see that the painter does not follow the path of straight eroticism. The works express the sensuality and emotions of the model itself. The painter does not try to depict the model in an attractive or aesthetic pose or to portray it beautifully because, first of all, she chose exactly that model and such a body, which is like an emotional object.

It is impossible not to notice that the connection between eroticism, love and the body as one of its means of expression in the media age is the idea of his „constant inner activity”. In “Love and Other Technologies: Retrofitting Eros for the Information Age” (2006), Dominic Pettman explored the „tectonic” shifts in modern culture by discussing Eros. The relationship between love and the body, in his view, means the articulation of the technique of belonging: a way of responding to the basic multiple identity of each individual – a process that, like mediated communication, is becoming increasingly complex.

Meda Norbutaitė’s acts and paintings depicting naked bodies do not contain a certain aggression characteristic of the genre of eroticism (for example, in literature or photography), an aggressive, provocative look, which is often associated with eroticism. Artistic language is interesting, it doesn’t need to sort everything out exactly, neither eroticism nor aggression. More sarcasm, for example, in the work Erotica of Conscience (2017) opens up with rats flying through the body. For her, aggression as such is important in the works of many contemporary artists depicting naked bodies. Aggression, eroticism, pain – attract the attention of a modern person – is a common component of modern visual culture (photography, cinema, advertising, etc.) or literature, which attracts the viewer’s attention. These are the most touching human themes: „A lot of open, vulgar bodies are the most hooked, the most noticeable, the most exciting or nervous …” (MN).

Meda’s artistic expression is characterized by the principle of non finito (it is incompleteness) and a unique dynamic that is reminiscent of old cinema – a human figure gradually moves from one frame to another. In the bodies painted by the artist, it is as if this possibility of movement is felt – it would seem that the head will turn soon, the body will move immediately. Such painting expresses the most essential things with the incompleteness of the artistic form, aesthetic hint and non-expression, which becomes an important means of emotional impact for the viewer. As A. Šliogeris aptly observes, “the mission of the great work is to capture, preserve that incredibly delicate goes into formlessness, never going into it.” [8]

We can also relate to this non-finito principle that torsos are highlighted in the acts of the people the artist paints, and they are often depicted as “faceless” or “headless”. The face, which testifies to the authenticity and identity of the person being painted, disappears („Captain of Passions, 2017,” the faces are covered by shadows (in” Publicity „, 2019), faces turned away from the viewer (” Artist’s Act „, 2019). The model’s face and gaze do not provoke the viewer. Here you can find the spiritual commonality of Meda Norbutaitė’s work and with the thoughts of the French philosopher Emanuel Levin that there is an element of monsterism and inhumanity in art – especially in the representation of the face. Art gives the face a plastic form, first of all, it imprisons it and inevitably turns it into a caricature. Second, the face in artistic form loses its temporality. The vibrant and expressive one becomes not changing, static, and inviolable. It is not the ethical face of the Other.

Non finito is seen in paintings depicting male bodies. The painter seems to be trying to soften the eroticism that stands out in works of this nature. The male body is completely open to „inspection”, observation, but incompleteness gives the male figure dynamics. In recent years, Meda Norbutaitė has added elements of irony or grotesque to her compositions, which contain references to social issues and themes of city life. For example, Hipsters (2019) ironically depicts a trio of bearded and goggled naked men who associate them with the composition of Eduard Manet’s Breakfast on the Grass. Another work with this unique dynamic is the work in Publicity (2019), which depicts the bodies of teenage girls as a promise of femininity. This piece seems to lead and evoke associations with the problem of ideal, lean body, anorexia and fashion industry models. The old canons of female beauty have disappeared in models, and the depicted body is the promise of femininity. Models that walk on the catwalk show not femininity and bodily beauty, but rather aggression and indifference.

Looking at Meda Norbutaitė’s works, it can be seen that the painter chooses a model that would seem to be „problematic” in itself – full, large, aging, wrinkled or radiating with corporeality. Obviously, the model is very important for this genre, its external and internal relationship.

„It’s an interesting and important model for me, a different relationship [emerges] with everyone,” the painter emphasizes. “But the body becomes a symbol to say the thought. I make sketches, then I take them, I compose and then the body becomes a symbol to express an idea: I take them from sketches, a person no longer acts as
a person, he becomes a symbol. Sometimes a small mark on the body of model is a symbol of „broken life” (M N.)

Conclusion: the meta-physical reality

The meta-physical reality created in Meda Norbutaitė’s paintings reveals the most essential transformations of human life and being, the main symbol of which is the human body. We can say that the artist is connected with the work of art in many ways: first, she/he is determined to obey the creative impulse and second, give a being
to something that did not exist before. For the viewer, the work of art opens up as an already created, ready-made and materially frozen reality, which, captured by amazement, joyfulness or loss of promise, which opens up to it as an absolute, never-ending beginning.

Taip pat galime paminėti XIX a. tapytojus Gustave’ą Moreau, Augustą Renoirą, Claude’ą Monet bei XX a. pradžios austrų ekspresionistą Egoną Schiele’ą, kurių įtakos regimos Medos tapyboje.

Galima būtų paminėti XX a. pabaigos menininkių Eglės Rakauskaitės, Jurgos Barilaitės, Laisvydės Šalčiūtės, Violetos Bubelytės kūrybą ar XXI a. pradžioje Lietuvos meniniame lauke įsitvirtinusių menininkių Jurgitos Remeikytės, Almos Skersytės, Irmos Stanaitytės, Lauros Stasiulytės, Vilmos Šileikienės ar Kristinos Inčiūraitės kūrybą. „Man patinka visoks kūnas, man patinka jį tapyti, kūnas vizualiai patrauklus, faktūros, formos…“9 – pabrėžia Meda.

Be to, jame pavaizduoti jusliškai individualizuoti daiktai”11, – rašė A. Šliogeris, filosofiškai apmąstydamas meno kūrinio prasmės ir daiktiškumo klausimus. Meda, naudodamasi įvaldyta rembrantiškąja chiaroscuro (it.

Dominicas Pettmanas knygoje Meilė ir kitos technologijos: pritaikyti Erosą informaciniam amžiui (Love and Other Technologies: Retrofitting Eros for the Information Age, 2006), aptardamas Eroso kalbą, tyrinėjo „tektoninius“ šiuolaikinės kultūros poslinkius.

MEDA NORBUTAITĖ: TOPOLOGY OF THE BODY AND THE WORLD OF EROTIC PASSION

Antanas  Andrijauskas

1. The beginings and the emergence of artistic style.

In the landscape of the contemporary fine arts of Lithuania Meda Norbutaitė should be distinguished because of her intellectuality and emphasized sensuality, pointing to her passionate nature. From here arises the plastic language of elemental energy of her painting, often shockingly open erotic motifs, numerous striking baroque details. Human figures and objects in her works are usually painted in an emphatically realistic manner, highligting fanciful reliefs and creasy surfaces. But sometimes, especially in the erotic visions and the so-called ‘still lives of thought’, the habitual features of objects are distorted by metaphors emerging from her poetic perception of reality; real things mingle with the unreal images of dreams and erotic fantasies. The imagery of her paintings is created from various details, linked by association and inherited from different art styles (for example, realism and symbolism, or naturalism and abstraction), merged together like in a collage, and often contradicting one another because of that.

The main object of Norbutaitė’s creative aspiration is the human existence, its emotional experiences, eroticism, the beauty of the harmonious body, the relation of man to the surrounding world of objects and forms of nature.

As a matter of fact, no other Lithuanian artist is so interested in the beauty of the human body, the complicated world of emotional relationships, the spiritual contact between people, the world of elemental passion. It is an exceptional field of Norbutaitė’s artistic interest, in which the most subtle psychological cathegories unfold, as well as relations between eroticism, sexuality and love that Michel Foucault and other postmodernists found so attractive. Norbutaitė immerses into the natural animalist nature of man, suppressed by civilization, into the world of his emotions and mysterious experiences of beauty, linked to the language of the body and various symbols, signs, emotional experiences. In the paintings that glorify eroticism and the beauty of the human body, the mysterious closeness of the gaze intermingles with the enigmatic language of the body, with the poetics of the soft touch, feel, dream and desire.

Sexuality is first of all related to sexual satisfaction, while eroticism is a more complex phenomenon – it encourages sensual and intellectual satisfaction, expanding incredibly the range of the artist’s imaginary powers. It also differs from love, which is a feeling that unfolds in yet another realm of emotional experience. For eroticism, the beauty of the body is extremely important as well as its relation with form, colour, the appreciation of which in its totality or an effective detail excites in one – usually a person of the other sex – a powerful erotic desire that descends from one’s animalist origin. The desire is usually inspired by mature, healthy, strong bodies, recognized by compliant torsos and naturally graceful movements, arousing erotic excitement as well as a powerful mutual magnetism between yin and yang.

The main fields of Norbutaitė’s artistic expression are painting and murals, while printmaking and drawing in various mixed techniques are less frequent. Her perception of creation is closely related to her personal existential occurences, dramatic inner experiences, studies of intellectual biographies and works of the greatest art masters of the past. She says: I have never liked recreating what I see. I always try to express an idea, to encode a message in my painting. Of course, impressing for an effect is also important for me. Observing artworks I always first of all note the idea, its expression, and then the textures and the forms.1 Though Norbutaitė is prominent in various art styles, her powerful energy, colours, feel of texture, emotional stroke distingush her first of all as a painter who leans on reflection of personal experience in her work.

An attentive retrospective look at the artist’s creative career discloses the dominating quest for a unique style, linked to the constant emotional heave, as well as the ‘tasting’ of possibilities provided by various art styles and methods, and a clear, consistent improvement of technique.

Norbutaitė’s unique style evolution has been affected by teachers, museum studies, impressions from exhibitions or art albums. Out of many teachers whom she has met in Kaunas and Šiauliai, the most important was her encounter with prof. Vincentas Gečas, who had at that time moved to Šiauliai University after resignation from the position of Rector of Vilnius Academy of Arts. Norbutaitė got into the course of Gečas’ MA students and acquired the chance to form her own attitude to painting under the coordination of a real professional of the field. Gečas would not try, like most other famous local artists, to mould his students into his own form of thought and artistry. For him, the most important aspect of work with students was to reveal their own individuality, to help them develop their own personality, world perception and creative style.

A connoisseur of the plastic language of painting, professor noticed the sense of form, colour and texture in his student, and directed her insightfully towards the improvement of the technical skill. From here arises Norbutaitė’s attention to the technique of brush control, knowledge of the textures created on canvas by the emotional strokes of the brush, and the importance of relief structures. More than ten years after her graduation, the artist confesses that, standing in front of the canvas, she can still feel the glance of the professor on her back, watching her.

Speaking of the context of Lithuanian art, it is possible to claim with certain reservation that Norbutaitė’s impressive, distinctive style of painting reminds that of Sofija Veiverytė – a painter of powerful emotional energy, master of flexible line and spontaneous colour patches. In Norbutaitė’s best works of the latter years the traces of the brush, textures and baroque details unfold even more convincingly. Her sensuality, elemental painting style, attention to textures, to separate bright details of composition and some spontaneous elements of plastic language bent towards abstraction make her in a certain sense close to Dalia Kasčiūnaitė. With regard to separate elements of treatment of the body topology close to the naturalistic trend of surrealism, she approaches the compositions of Šarūnas Sauka. Yet differently from Sauka, who emphasizes the negative tragic aspects of human existence, Norbutaitė is a believer in joyful existence, to whom the cathegories of beauty, harmony, order are fundamental. Aesthetic order is very important for me, – she says. I do not deny beauty, even though it is a fashionable trend now. Some even avoid the word ‘beautiful’. My paintings are entitled beautiful, though others are afraid of them.2

Here the links with Lithuanian art contexts are exhausted, in my opinion. Contemplation of Norbutaitė’s imaginary world brings about the images of Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt, Peter Rubens, the Dutch Golden Age painters, French Romantics, Pre-Raphaelits, impressionists, neoromantics, especially masters of the Viennese secession (Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele), the symbolist Gustave Moreau and his gold-gilded, precious stone-colour covered naked female and strong male bodies. Norbutaitė’s thematic compositions and still lives show principles of alogical composition and unexpected arrangement, favoured by Paris School expressionists and surrealists. Those various influences, filtered through her own aesthetic criteria, define the main vectors of Norbutaitė’s creative career. They generate the intellectuality of her works, which comes forward in the metaphors of her thought and her inclination towards irony, grotesque, self-analysis.

Diving into the depths of Norbutaitė’s creation we should also speak of an exceptional importance of theunconscious mind. The aesthetics of Norbutaitė’s paintings is grounded in various forms of higher reality, the omnipotence of dreams, the unselfish play of the idea. Many of her paintings, especially those of erotic contents, seem to bring to life visions of mysterious dreams, penetrating into the sphere of elemental passions that rises above the everyday life, where in the fiery vortexes of passion the boundaries between dream and reality disappear. This brings about the vitality of the artist’s painting style, her unusual compositions, alogic principles of image arrangement and compaction.

It is possible to trace the aesthetics of Romanticism, symbolism and secession in Norbutaitė’s works. Among creators of modernism and postmodernism she is most interested in the artists who have a prominent style and are not afraid to provoke or to challenge the established artistic ideals. That explains her attention to creators of such varied styles and generations as Edvard Munch, Egon Schiele, Frida Kahlo, Chaim Soutine, Andy Warhol, Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst, Jeffrey Koons, Günter Brus.

2. Topology of the body and the world of erotic passions.

The recurring themes in Norbutaitė’s work are eroticism, beauty of the human body, the variety of surrounding objects, animals and forms of nature. Painting man, the beauty of his body and the objects of the inanimate world that surrounds him, the artist links them directly to various traces of human history, at the same time immersing herself into the most important problems of human existence that she finds important at the moment of creation. That generates the philosophical implications of her works, the importance of various ‘cultural layers’, which she brings to life in her works with the help of symbols and metaphors.

The erotic motifs of Norbutaitė’s works function in the poetic space between reality and dream, inspired by powerful desires. The complex world of human emotional experience is at the focus of her studies, as well as the human body in all its forms, the aesthetic aspects and topology of which has been so greatly discussed by the French art philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Developing his theory of a phenomenal body, he explains that the body of a live person is both regarding and regarded, it can look at his own self, feel his own relation with his existence. Thus the dependence of the body on a concrete world, a certain civilizational and sociocultural space, a historical epoch is emphasized. According to Merleau-Ponty, this relation between the body and its world is most obvious in works of literature and painting. In this way the thinker fluently proceeds into the specific realm of aesthetic analysis, relating the tactile senses of the hand directly with the sequence of visual perception, style of gestures, etc. He claims that “the body should be compared not with a physical object, but rather with a work of art”, because “in a painting or a fragment of music an idea cannot work on you in any other way but involve you through colours and images”.3

Norbutaitė seems to know the basic psychological principles of sensual and visual perception, i.e. that the body of every healthy person encompasses a wide range of various specific inner senses which provide us with important imformation about the objects depicted in paintings. In the artist’s development of this theme things, objects, elements of landscape related to eternity, to the breathing of history become important. They are depicted as mysterious, full of scary symbolism, in the form they emerge in human memory – like in a fog or haze. The ephemeric fogs and hazes are frequent in Norbutaitė’s works of various genres, and they have yet another important function – they soften and hazen the enormous gap between the world of dreams, expectations, desires and wishes and the grey, often hopeless everyday. I am the sea. Sometimes wavy, sometimes clam, but always safe in the arms of the sensual and fresh fog.4

The world of art phenomena is first of all about seeing. With our eyes we distinguish not only the objects of the outer environment, visual forms and the signals of light, but also various sensations, fantasies born deep in the unconscious, visions inspired by imagination. It is not an accident that in Norbutaitė’s works the main attention is devoted to one of the most important senses – that of sight. For the artist it becomes an instrument for affecting the viewer, helping to convey in a visually convincing way the phenomena of the inner and the outer world. A careful look at Norbutaitė’s works makes one consider the viewer’s senses that function actively in the perception of an art work. Really, the gaze of the viewer, spanning over the space of her paintings filled with eroticism, seems to be physically touching the masterfully painted forms of the human body, interriors, materials; the perception creates an illusion that we are touching the bodies, and the chairs, tables, glasses, spoons created from various materials, and the touch works on the surface of our skin, sending nervous impulses of the images we have just experienced into the responsible part of our brain.

It means that the blooming corporeality, embodied in the art works by means of painting, the search for the artist’s alter ego, opened up in the bright colours of precious stones, streaming the light of love, and the related erotic sensuality tears the viewer out of the grey everyday and immerses him into the stormy sea of elemental passions. Those sensual erotic motifs of Norbutaitė’s works have been emerging in her early creation already. The early works demonstrate various fanciful images of the female body, peculiar for neoromantic painting aesthetics which glorifies its eroticism and beauty. It is mainly due to the influence of Pre-Raphaelite, symbolist and secession art Norbutaitė’s images emphasize the beauty of the female and the male body.

From the indefinite realm of total sensuality three main recurring images emerge that penetrate her body topology and the world of erotic passion: first – the male body, strong as the mythical Minotaurus, full of powerful biological energy; second – the beautiful female body, that is often consciously personified by the author into various self-portraits or sacral images of femininity; third – the elemental union of the two origins in vortexes of passion.

The main attention of the artist while revealing the theme of eroticism is focused on masculinity, or, in other words, the male torso symbolising male biological power. From the early works that glorify the beauty of the male body we can distinguish The Soldier (2001–2002), Sin (2002), Atlantes (2003), The Lord Reposing (2003), The King (2003), among others. All of them, beginning with The Soldier, glorify the power and physical beauty of a strong male body. In this picture the attention is focused on the frontal part of an athletic male torso, his head and limbs are not important. The same idea is even more pronounced in Atlantes, where the most significant part of the picture is dominated by the dynamism of movement of strong male bodies. These pictures create the cult of a beautiful, erotic, aestheticised body that grows into an adoration of masculinity. This glorification of the body in the artist’s works, with attention focused on powerful torsos, gradually develops a more erotic tinge.

Not less poetic are the sensual erotic female images of sleek forms, radiating yin eroticism that opposes the male yang origin. The pictures Body Magic. Dangerous Passions (2002), Blossom (2002), Body Porcelain (2003) are just beginning to unfold the relation between the female body pulsating the aura of fertility and the desire of the male body emphasized with the artist’s favourite torsos. It looks like most of the early canvases devoted to the body typology are too declarative, still lacking the interaction between form and contents, the mysterious secretiveness, attention to the plastic revelation of the idea that characterises the best paintings of Norbutaitė. This open eroticism is not common for the reserved tradition of Lithuanian art, it challenges the social conventions and forces the painter turn to interpretation of motifs from art history.

Many later paintings, devoted to this theme, for example Feeling (2006), Daydreams (2006), Troya (2006), Heat (2007), Openness (Self-Nude) (2007) devote their main attention to beautiful female torsos and female figures producing different hypostases of the visual expression of beauty of the female body.

Here from the erotic images emerging from the depths of the unconscious, among the artist’s senses, personal existence and traces of past history unfold visions of an unreal world, the beauty of which is expressed ever more richly. Expressive plastic language of painting in Norbutaitė’s pictures diminishes the gap between the impressive form and emotionally replete contents. The paintings lose their sentimentality, directness, peculiar to the artist’s earlier work, becoming more characteristic. Later works demonstrate a much clearer vision of ideas.

Further development of the erotic theme is obvious in the works In Passions (2010) and Self-portrait. In the Hands of Sculptors (2011). The first is a horizontal chamber picture, showing the back of a woman lying in an extravagant, ancient, gold-gilded bathtub, immersed in ruby coloured water, symbolising the stream of passion. The second picture Self-portrait. In the Hands of Sculptors, glorifying the beauty and eroticism of the female body, in comparison with the above mentioned ones, and especially with later works painted in spontaneous baroque strokes marking the soft sleek sensuality of the female body and the beauty of its forms, is grounded in a totally different, much more reserved body aesthetics. First of all, it is more ascetic in the formation of its image creation strategy. It is attested by a different manner of painting that reminds of dry English watercolour. The image creation principles here are more ascetic and more structurally organised, different from earlier works that glorified the sensual beauty of the body.

3. A psychoanalytic glance.

Norbutaitė is fascinated by exceptional personalities, their body and spiritual power, intellect and inner artistry. They inspire the tension between exceptionality, aristocracy and the grey everyday, that is peculiar for her work. It is even possible to treat this part of Norbutaitė’s creation as an illustration of various psychoanalytical theories that speak of the importance of the unconscious and the biological human nature with its complex emotional experiences. It is true that the creative process of this elemental type of artist is directly linked to the glorification of the powerful biological energy – regarded by psychoanalysis as the essential profundity source of a spontaneous creative type. The artist seems to admit that, saying that through my paintings I just want to express myself.5

The beginner of psychoanalysis Siegmund Freud, analysing the origins of artistic creation, related it to the human passion for play which later develops into an inclination to fantasize, create a unique world of images and illusions that contradicts the reality. Unable to achieve glory, wealth, love and other most secret desires, artists, in his view, transfer those desires marked by libido (from Latin – attraction, sexual desire, passion, aspiration), in the process of creation, from the real world into the one of fantasy.6 It is understandable, because a sensitive artist reacts more intensely to his unfulfilled desires than a common person. Which means that an artist rejects the outer reality, ignoring the accepted social, ethical principles and seeks to satisfy his erotic, egotistic needs in the world of fantasy. This psychoanalytical detour, opening up the most intimate, mysterious streams of the artists’s unconscious, may be one of the possible ways to interpret Norbutaitė’s work.

Regarding the mysterious, secretive images created by Norbutaitė that glorify eroticism and the beauty of the human body, it is possbile to turn to another authority of psychoanalysis Carl Gustav Jung and his archetype theory. In it Jung discusses, among other things, the interaction between the two archetypes that symbolize masculinity (animus), and femininity (anima): “In the Middle Ages, long before the physiologists demonstrated that by reason of our glandular structure there are both male and female elements in all of us, it was said that „every man carries a woman within himself. It is this female element in every male that I have called the „anima.“ This „feminine“ aspect is essentially a certain inferior kind of relatedness to the surroundings, and particularly to women, which is kept carefully concealed from others as well as from oneself.7

In anima many archetypal, irrational, chaotic, capricious, emotional, erotic, seductive images are joined (Eve, Venus, Madona, Cinderella, the princess, the mermaid, the siren, etc.). Those dangerous, magical images, masked under various robes and shapes, always strive to set a trap, to enchant, to seduce the male, to subordinate his erotic energy, in this way continuing the great circle of Life. Similar motifs, glorifying bodily love and eroticism, dominate in many pictures of Norbutaitė that develop the theme of eroticism.

The artist’s poetic anthems for the glorious feeling of love and spiritual closeness of people, for the beauty of the human body, for eroticism inspire thoughts about the meaning of human existence. Her pictures, glorifying the condition of love and human fellowship, happiness, spiritual heights, are full of exaltation and self-oblivion. They radiate authenticity of feeling, goodness and fragility. This sensitivity and fragility sometimes permeates Norbutaitė’s painting technique which grows tired of hiding her emotionality, and shines boldly through the thin layer of paint laid with sensitive strokes.  Emotion merges with energetic lines of character, passion and imagination, producing colourful images of the inner existential drama.

The paintings radiate maximalism as well as a tendency towards exaltation, characteristic to the artist; they take us to personal psychological sores, endured dramatic events. The existentialism of creation conditions the openness and universality of the image system. The dance of love and death allows the viewers to see in a painting the story of passion, at the same time touching upon the deepest registers of their souls, opening up enormous spaces for their imagination.

Later the blue-brown colour range of love pictures is joined and gradually becomes dominated by the ruby, favoured by Norbutaitė and interpreted as the symbol of the passion of love. Its powerful erotic energy overshadows other colours. The ruby is the symbol of love and passion for life,8 says the artist. Yet this long-term rampage of passion gradually fades away and the open, temperamental pulse of powerful emotions is gradually pushed away by calmer colours that relate to the cycle of nature and human life and are characteristic to a mature personality.

The discussed erotic pictures, glorifying the beauty of human body, relate also to the masterfully painted Barbora’s Chess Game (2012), through its motifs and imagery that is close to the historical genre of depiction. Norbutaitės work, similarly to the works of Augustinas Savickas, Sofija Veiverytė, Bronius Leonavičius, Giedrius Kazimierėnas, Antanas Beinaravičius, Aleksandras Vozbinas and other Lithuanian painters, evidence the aspiration of Lithuanian art to turn to the great history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. One of the most exceptional women of Lithuanian history Barbora Radvilaitė’s passion for chess is well-known from historical sources.

Yet the facts and data about the beauty and lifestyle of this special woman, about the drama of her love and life, her aspirations for the crown serves Norbutaitė merely as a convenient additional material for expressing her own ideas about the eternal problems of the female existence. The picture Barbora’s Chess Game shows again the previously developed motifs of bodily eroticism and passion. The painting demonstrates interesting composition, performed as if at one elemental stroke of passion. Yet, like many other works of the artist, some space is lacking for the picture to be described as perfect. I would also like to mention that this painting in its technique and imagery is extremely close to the modern Lithuanian art tradition, grounded in grey landscape. It means that Norbutaitė’s treatment of historical plots betrays her interest in human emotions, their “history of passion” rather than in their historical sensuality. Taking a woman out of the norms of her social class denudes her feminine nature (Barbora is depicted as a chess figure in the kings’ game).

4. Still lives, interiors and landscapes.

Next to the body topology that emphasizes eroticsm and the feeling of love, the other genre favoured by Norbutaitė is still life. This sphere is most probably the best for revealing her mastery of technique. In the modern national Lithuanian art school, due to Justinas Vienožinskis who valued highly the importance of Sezannian still life tradition, this genre during the between-war period would most often be limited to depiction of inanimate objects, vases, fruit and flower compositions. The latter concept of still life has become canonical for Lithuanian art – due to a large number of Vienožinskis’ students – and has prevailed until today. Yet Norbutaitė, following the Dutch still life tradition, expands the limits of this genre in Lithuania.

Norbutaitė’s concept of still life has been greatly affected by the painters of the Dutch Golden Age, especially W. C. Heda, who used to depict tables covered with expensive glassware, metalware and extravagant dishes. Heda would demonstrate the mastery of his technique by reproducing reflections of light on the objects arranged on the table. His work is characterised by grey-green or brownish colours, detailed coverage of the objects’ material, texture, volume. These lessons are very important to Norbutaitė, who composes objects in a similar manner, emphasizing their structure, material, spatial relations, seeking for their harmony in colour, tone, shade and light.

From the Dutch painting tradition come many of those things that Norbutaitė turns into objects of her still lives (I could even say ‘heroes’, because objects of strange forms encoded with symbolical meanings often take over the functions of people). Those objects are almost always unique, as if taken from houses of wealthy bourgeoisie, aristocratic mansions or expensive antique shops and transferred to another context, a concrete historical or quotidian environment, created by the artist in her vision. Usually under this impressive outer layer of the still lives, which sometimes seems too naturalistic, we see another subtly hidden philosophical layer that brings back to life elements of historical memory, reconstruction, full of great metaphysical meaning. It is not an accident that one of Norbutaitė’s exhibition cycles has the metaphorical title Still Lives of Thought.

I think that attention to this genre and careful studies of museum materials has led the artist to regarding the technical aspect of painting with much more responsibility than most of her colleagues do. She has achieved the mastery level of brush command, and it is obvious in her works of various genres of the later years.

During the two decades of her creative career Norbutaitė has produced many still lives in various mannrs, where the main focus of study and attention usually falls on various things of original forms and materials, affected by history and demonstrating its traces or the patina of time. They are especially favoured by artists of East Asia. I have always been fascinated by things. Things emerge as objects that help to express an idea. And every work transmits a message about human relations, personal moments, the existence itself. And every person may create something individual for himself through the things I have depicted – for himself alone. One does not have to try to imagine what I was imagining when I was painting those objects,9 says the artist. The things she chooses for her still lives often have visually attractive appearance, but also another, subtly masked, symbolical meaning. That is why her still lives are not passive depictions of the inanimate world – here objects turn into ‘talking” things that tell of the world and its stories in a spiritualised manner.

Norbutaitė’s painting of still lives and interrior details discloses two polemising directions that often intermingle in one artwork. The first is closer to the classical Dutch and later perception of still life. Here the attitude to historical memory characteristic to realist and naturalist art is maintained: the depicted object is encoded, it is painted presicely, with emphasis on the details of relief and texture.

The second direction is more affected by the aesthetics that glorifies form, texture and relief. Regarding these works one may get an erroneous impression that due to the strive to depict in detail the minutest aspects of various objects and quotidian things (such as recognizable textures of extravagant textiles, unique metal objects, furniture), the main attention is focused on the representation of the verisimilitude of things and objects. This idea is not actually correct, because the artist is not less interested in the solution of purely plastic problems of painting itself, as well as the problems of cultural memory.

Among the best works of this type are Necklace of the Household (2009), Full of History (2010), Heritage (2012), Psalm (2011), Patterns of Thought (2011), Prayer-Books (2013). They all share the wish to waken up the historical memory, they are painted in the manner that links baroque Rubensian, symbolical and sometimes almost surrealist aesthetic elements. Though the works are similar in their spirit, yellow-brownish colour and virtuosity of the painting technique, yet their compositional solutions differ. They all testify to the artist’s professional growth in the important aspect of technique. In terms of composition, the most complex is, perhaps, Heritage, where many dishes and other objects on the table are masterfully arranged into an integral system.

The intellectualism of Norbutaitė’s painting is emphasized by her inclination towards playful irony, grotesque and strict social critique. Along with ironic and grotesque still lives one finds some that demonstrate certain ‘hidden metaphorical meaning’. This is obvious first of all in the yellowish-blue painting of 2002 Conversation of Teapots in an Antique Shop, that may be perceived as a preparatory sketch for later studies of the body topology, unfolded in the erotic pictures. Yet all the power of the artist is revealed later, in such works as The Tub of Dreams (2009), Proportioning Passion (2010), A Talk With Those Who Have Gone (2013), A Passionate Talk (2014). The painting Discussion, meanwhile, presents the metaphorical picture of three meat grinders, satirising on the political life of the society: one is grinding pasta to ‘hang on the ears’ of people (or lying, like politicians do), the other has a ‘mouth running’ with appetite (or eagerness for spreading the lies, like the media does), and the last one is dropping rubies (like the people who seem to be happy to be fooled).

Norbutaitė has also created a number of very good pictures that are similar to still lives, yet a little aside from her main themes. For example, the masterfully painted Symbol (2012), depicting the symbol of Christianity, crucifix, painted in yellowish tones, gilded with precious stones. Another painting, notable for composition and for colour as well as for the plastic solution is Bread of Rubies (2004).

The outer visual layer of these works encourages the viewer to develop his memory. Objects, things of home painted on canvas here create new narrative stories and contexts, related to the essential changes of social consciousness and cultural memory. That is why the object-depicting layer raises unconscious associations that have a great historical and cultural meaning, makes the viewer remember and reflect on the worlds of past cultures and various social structures that the painted objects relate to.

Another genre underused by Norbutaitė – regrettably for the admirers of her talent – is landscape. In her version of it, various traditions of classical, symbolist and surrealist art intermingle. The subtle landscapes of bright colour Anastazija’s Nesting-Boxes (2010) and Dinnertime (2010) show the enormous potential of the artist in this genre. It is quite sad that her expression in a sphere so important for an emotional artist is so episodic. The mentioned landscapes are not traditional Western landscapes, in their organisation they are closer to the “dream lansdcape” tradition of East Asian masters. Here Norbutaitė, like the great masters of Chinese and Japanese painting, creates not real but imaginative landscapes emerging from the depths of the unconscious. Similarly to the great Chinese masters of ink painting she depicts her visions in realistic detail, mingling it with surrealist and sometimes mannerist baroque details, thus producing lansdcapes of imagination. Those ‘dream landscapes’ are distinguished by specific transparency of the manner of painting, untouched by abundance of thick or small detailed strokes. Here the East Asian images intertwine in a strange way with transparent Breugel-like sky, the impressionistic colour sensitivity mingles with elements of classical art, symbolsim and modernism.

Sometimes in Norbutaitė’s pictures we see unusual forms of hybrid genres, characteristic to postmodernist aesthetics. This is already obvious in an early work Silver Sea (2000) that unites elements of still life and a seascape, where the disorderly arrangement of spoons and forks create the illusion of a wavy sea. Yet the mentioned principle of genre hybridity and metamorphosis is best implemented in the lyrical melancholy of Autumn Adagio (2010). This masterfully painted work of yellowish tones shows chaotically arranged musical instruments that in a strange way are transformed into a landscape of golden autumn colours.

The imagery of Norbutaitė’s last years has been actively penetrated by the world of animals, which is depicted through the artist’s personal relation to the object shown. It is obvious in the painting Accessories, for example, that presents her favourite dog, elegant and aristocratic in manner. The aesthetic quality of the work Chains (2009) should be mentioned here, which depicts a sheep in blue-silver background. Not less expressive are The Golden Calf (2016) and Blue Blood. Washing (2016). The latter shows a huge pink pig with an enormous butt, bathed in an extravagant bath – a hint of the washing-off-dirt process in politics. Yet in terms of plastic form I would point out one of the latest works with the ironic title Pacifist, depicting a masterfully painted horse. The process of multidirectional development of the artist’s themes, the strengthening of irony and authorial motifs, observed in the last years, show the great potential of Norbutaitė’s talent, allowing to expect new, astonishing turns of her creative biography.

Meda Norbutaitė is one of the most remarkable figures of the contemporary Lithuanian painting. Her elemental female nature puts her into one line with Sofija Veiverytė, Dalia Kasčiūnaitė and others, yet she has taken up her own niche in the colourful landscape of Lithuanian art. No other Lithuanian artist is so powerful, bright and open in their treatment of eroticism, strong atrraction between man and woman, passion, spiritual and physical link to the object of love and inner attachment to it, search for intimacy, the beauty cult of the human body and adoration of the bodily love. In Norbutaitė’s work we find traces of influence of numerous masters of the past, filtered through her individual temperament. The impulsive, spontaneous artist is casual with imitation of reality, because she realises that authentic painting, which raises important problems for man, is first of all based on the subtle language of form, colour, texture and other formal means of artistic expression.

Balancing the principles of realism, Romanticism, symbolism, surrealism, secession, expressionism of the Paris School and abstraction aesthetics, she creates her individual eroticism, a world of artistic images that glorifies the beauty of the human body, which is characterised by special intimacy and sensitivity to teritories of postmodern aestheticism, usually ignored by other artists.

Finally, the use of aesthetic and psychological powers of the emotional impact of the tactility and sight on the viewer becomes an important means of the aesthetic effect of her work. In other words, tactility is one of the most important characteristics of the whole artistic work of Norbutaitė, not just her still lives. The artist uses various composition principles, confrontation of contrasting objects, colour zones, precise realist depiction of nature and expressive, almost abstract, imagery, impressive arrangement of the whole and the fragment. In many of her works specific attention is devoted to an impressive detail, emotional colour and its most sensitive tones, creasy surfaces or their expressive relief texture.

New fresh colours and suggestive plastic forms unfold the original theme of Norbutaitė’s work – the glorification of human body, the flows of passion, the beauty of the human body and its emotional experiences. And – what is the most important in art – it creates an individual language of painting.

MEDOS NORBUTAITĖS KŪNO TOPOLOGIJA IR EROTINIŲ AISTRŲ PASAULIS

Antanas Andrijauskas

Be to, svarbus daiktų išsidėstymas.

Estetinė tvarka man labai svarbi, – teigia ji.

Antrasis paveikslas Autoportretas.

Šis motyvas pateikiamas tiesmukai, be ypatingų niuansų.

4. Natiurmortai, interjerai ir peizažai

Greta erotiškumą ir meilės jausmą iškeliančios kūno topologijos kitas svarbiausias Norbutaitės pamėgtas dailės žanras yra natiurmortas (pranc. nature morte – negyvoji gamta) ir šiam žanrui artima namų senų interjerų detalių, baldų ir namų apyvokos daiktų tapyba. Ši sritis turbūt geriausiai atskleidžia jos kruopščiu darbu įgytą tapymo technikos meistriškumą. Lietuvių moderniojoje tautinėje dailės mokykloje dėl Justino Vienožinskio, aukštai vertinusio sezaniškosios natiurmorto tradicijos svarbą, įtakos šis žanras mūsų tarpukario tapyboje dažniausiai apsiribodavo negyvų daiktų, vazų, smūtkelių, nuskintų vaisių ir gėlių kompozicijų vaizdavimu. Tokia natiurmorto tapybos samprata ilgainiui tampa dėl Vienožinskio gausių mokinių įtakos kanoniška visai XX a. Lietuvos dailei iki šių dienų. Tačiau į olandų natiurmortų tapybos tradiciją besiorientuojanti Norbutaitė išplečia minėtos mūsų natiurmortų tapybos tradicijos ribas. Ji greta įprastų mums motyvų į savo natiurmortus drąsiai įtraukia olandų pamėgtus kitus žmogaus veiklos atributus, daiktus, motyvus, įvairius jūros gyvius, gyvūnus, paukščius bei kitų tapybos žanrų elementus.

Norbutaitės natiurmorto sampratai didžiulį poveikį turėjo mažųjų olandų tapyba, ypač XVII a. Harleme gyvenęs didis olandų natiurmortų tapybos meistras W. C. Heda, kuris vaizdavo brangiais stiklo, metalo indais ir rinktiniais valgiais padengtus stalus.

Pirmasis nutapytas preciziška XIX a. realistinei tapybai būdinga maniera, kurios tradiciškumas išryškėja grupėje nutapytų butelių, o antrasis – virtuoziškas, vaizduojantis chaotiškai sumestus senovinių knygų foliantus, išsiskiria riebia tapymo maniera su reljefinėmis faktūromis, pabrėžiant praeities kultūros istorijos nuosėdų svarbą.

Kitas puikus tiek kompozicijos, tiek kolorito bei plastiniu sprendimu paveikslas Rubinų duona (2004).

Vadinasi, išorinis vizualinis šių žanrų paveikslų sluoksnis skatina plėtoti suvokėjo atmintį. Drobėse nutapyti daiktai, namų apyvokos reikmenys čia kuria kitas naratyvines istorijas ir kontekstus, susijusius su esminėmis visuomeninės sąmonės slinktimis bei „kultūrinės atminties“ pokyčiais. Todėl vaizduojantis daiktus sluoksnis nesąmoningai suvokėjo sąmonėje sukelia kitas didžiulę istorinę ir kultūrinę prasmę turinčias asociacijas, verčia prisiminti, susimąstyti apie tuos negrįžtamai į praeitį nuslinkusius žmogiškos kultūros, įvairių visuomenės sluoksnių pasaulius, su kuriais asocijuojasi nutapyti daiktai.

Dar vienas periferinis negausus kūrinių žanras, kuriame atsiskleidžia kitos Norbutaitės talento pusės, yra peizažas, kurio traktavime susipina įvairių klasikinės, simbolistinės ir siurrealistinės dailės tradicijų bruožai. Pirmojo XXI a. dešimtmečio pabaigoje tapyti subtilaus skaidraus kolorito peizažai Anastazijos inkilai (2010) ir Pietų metas“ (2010) liudija didžiules potencines dailininkės raiškos galimybes šioje srityje.

THE RUBY PURGATORIES OF MEDA NORBUTAITĖ

Gintautas Mažeikis

Meda Norbutaitė’s painting, moderately surrealist, associating postmodernly the baroque and Peter Paul Rubens, seeks to reveal the energies of the spirit, soul purification and sacrifice, encouraging to overcome the stagnation of the soul and fly high with the birds. All her artistic themes have been unfolding in different attributes, preserving the unity between the preciseness of drawing and the emotion of painting, the personal harmony of thought and poetic expression. The works radiate the permanent fight and intrigue between the narrative of the drawing and the expression of painting, between the order of compostion and the freedom of colour.

1. Energy of objects. Drawing and painting compete with and restrain each other like narrative and emotion, like the order of the visual language and the poetic expression. It opens up the way to expressive and half-conscious tresspasings of form, certain anamorphoses, subtle psychological perversions, that make the painter’s freedom and his/her narrative to us.

The early theme of sacrifice has remained in the artist’s drawings, visual interpretations, almost without drama, without secret deviation. Encouraged by her teacher neorealist Vincentas Gečas, she unfolded the emotions concealed by objects, bravely overcoming the classical drawing with her emotional language: sensitivity of colour, expression, symbolical language and idea. At the begining her works were full of classical postmodern tension when, for example, the antique shop, imitated in a drawing – armchairs, sofas, chests of drawers with their relief textures, crevices and other – would be painted in colours that remind of her favourite baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens, but at the same time it was already an expression of her inner dramas. Yet every time the details or the paint, the layers or furrows, strokes and deviations would free the energies of the present, and the curves of forms would speak of surrealist deformation. Here the trends of abstraction, neorealism and surrealism would compete, the school tradition would more likely to be followed than the sublimation or criticism of her own passion, and the polemics with public passions would be of course avoided. Surrealist allusions have been affecting all of the artist’s creative work.

The still lives of Norbutaitė are related to the visible order and their barely audible, sometimes secretive, emotional whispers. Objects pronounce the repressed yet still surviving feelings, energies of life. After the World War II the German psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich named such energies of emotions that glide in cosmos and cut through galaxies orgonic. The name of Orgon synthesizes the biological, material organ and the psychic orgasm. In Reich’s view, orgonic energy is linked with the sexual organs and human psyche, but it also disperses in cosmos. Every copulation of people or animals radiates orgonic energy that is accidentaly accumulated by the objects nearby. Accessories are among the most important objects of fetishism. Meda’s Accessories (2013) seem to be showing erotic mannequins, decorated in provocative accessories. Next to them lies an exhausted dog – the iconographic symbol of mortified passion. In the painting we see temptation, sin, cold, various energies. Not only orgasmic touches, but also rage and fury, anxiety and joy that have scraped through the surface of the sofa or the drawer chest come to us together with the expectations of love. That energy may be opened again and radiate sympathy, passion or hate. The painter’s way to open the tensions concealed in objects is through her moods, play of colour, the strokes of paint. Fetishists believe that certain orgonic energy may waken orgasm even without copulation. In this way they penetrate quite blindly and deafly into the forbidden worlds. Meda is also taking us into those worlds, yet without the erotic illusion, deceptive joy or angelic promise, without the hypocritical exultation of cellulitic women and angels. The things she shows may equally paralyze us in hatred and horror, the burden of rejection. That is why shamans and sorcerers, before wearing a thing, first clean it from the energies of earlier wearers. Yet collectors of used things and used time assemble/ aggregate the tremblings of strangers’ souls without hesitation. The artist feels the whispers of objects, the silent talk of the fetish that replace the figures of time and space. She unlocks the chests of things with colours and symbols, opens them up with transformations of forms. In this way things are born – cells of time and space, traps of moaning and expectation. Sometimes she makes them talk in allegories, such as the meatgrinders or the golden bowls of her late period.

2. Sacrifice. The motif of totemic sacrifice is another important theme of Meda’s work. One of the drawings from her student time Sacrifice of the Black Gods follows the ideas of Alphonso Lingis. Sacrificing had always been related to a means of entering and leaving the World Beyond, where souls are not restricted by the order of the tribe and everyday. If one wishes to become different, to open the gate of the World Beyond, one needs to make a sacrifice. The sacrificed animals – oxes, goats, pigs, horses, sheep – are symbols of the spirit, totems. A totem is a special state of the man-animal. On the one hand, he is invited to talk to pre-human, pre-civilizational energies, to step into the Other World; on the other hand, he is the most extreme sacrifice offering. Every being may become a totem – be it a man, an animal or a plant, or a magical being. Gradually it became acceptable that the best sacrifice is a sheep – the symbol of humility and meekness, it replaced the human sacrifice (Washing. Sacrifice, 2015). In the world of stopped time the sacrificed sheep, goats, pigs, oxes, horses – all the animal farm – do not open the Other World any more, they do not show the road to Heaven or shine in heavenly smiles, but represent the meaninglessness of the consumption machine. The sacrifice is made not from the most beautiful, but from what remains, what is damaged, what is rubbish. What happened to the totemic world perception? The origin of totems is directly linked to the energy of objects and the opening of fetishes. When those energy conversations are smothered in the chaos of everyday, sacrifice becomes mere garbage of unnecessary heads, a carcass for the imprisoned gods.

Meda’s women are always erotically violated and radiate not the kind of energy that is desired by lame collectors of fetishes. The symbolism of the glorified slaughtered animal that is at the same time the disdained victim is peculiar to the consumerist and patriarchal interpretation of the woman: she is the god, the sex symbol, as well as the desired object and the sacrificed sheep at the same time (Troya, 2007–2015). Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman of Helade who caused the Troyan war, was turned into such a symbol of slaughter, blood and redemption. Rubbing off the skin of a sheep and sacrificing it to God remained at the core of the myth of the “golden wool”. Dressing Helene in the woolen robe of gold  – is that not the highest dream of a hero who cares about his own heroism and exceptionality? Yet one may ask differently: does a woman dream of becoming Helen dressed in a skin of humility before being turned into a sacrificed victim?

3. Purgatory. Meda’s creative work is liberation of the woman from the bastion – a fortified (self)imprisonment. What kind of liberation is it? Through the purgatory, through the washing heavens, through the ruby waters. All of her work is full of emotional and energetical cleansing, meaningful for everyone: objects, sheep, ravens, humans. The coolness of water is resisted by the purtagory warmed up by rubies; yet it does not purify, but drowns down. The female purification is not feebleness, not being a sheep of the purgatory, but the concentration of a Laumė [1], a bleeding inspiration. That is how Meda’s purgatory is essentially different from the Christian one, from Dante’s. Her purification is not Christian – it cleans not of passion, but of humility, not of desire, but of fear, not of sin, but of obedience. Bathing in ruby tubs means overcoming the fear.

The painting Keepers of Stopped Time (2016) shows crows sitting at the golden bathtub. Time runs in cycles, in river streams, roars in mountain waterfalls, flies with the winds of the sky, when life is a storm of meaning. When time stops, just the crows remain to look after bathtubs of water. The swampy water of bathtubs is the opposite of the river of Heraclitus that you cannot go into twice, and even more opposite to the sceptic Cratylus who said you can’t go into the river of time even once. Other paintings about the cold blue blood (Blue Blood I, Blue Blood II, 2014) show a pig in swampy waters. The society of the spectacle chooses immobility, eternity, cryopreservation, the deafness of strangers and the permanent fear of waking up to their dignity and freedom. Rubies eaten by crows are symbols of purification, like seeds of pomegranates that remind of the blooming gardens of love. Those inaccessible gardens host the sin and the redemption, the moving and roaring time: there walks Francesca de Rimini who fell in love with her brother-in-law and was punished to Hell by Dante, there Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet welcome their death. The great sins and deaths, and the stormy loving souls tossed by the whirls of the wind. The crows eat up the last hints of purification and energy from the eternity of time. This rotting lukewarm time differs completely from the softened clocks of Salvador Dali which still are able to show the dullness of a slumbering soul.

4. Public criticism. Meda’s artistic social critique contrasts the public, empowering time of her painting with the subconscious, slumbering or swampy used condition. The publicising that she makes is full of exposing mockery, here ever more often the rubies of the purgatory are pushed out by the lukewarm blue and lots of irony. One of such cold ironic paintings, balancing between surrealism and critical realism, is of Genies’ Dance (2014). It shows bending and sloping bottles, perhaps with gin, or perhaps with demons of a thousand and one night. The genies give a chance of spirit, a moment: you have to see it at the time the bottled is opened. You open, and the fog has vanished. If you didn’t manage to make your wish – open another bottle! Tramps are slow, their movements – lukewarm, and they don’t manage to ask anything from the liberated genies, thus the demonic thousand and one night promise of love brings misery rather than joy.

The theme of cold penetrates Meda’s work together with her emphasis on the social critique. The ruby bathtubs are gradually replaced with cold palettes of frost (Self-Purification, 2016; Palette 2016). Together with doubt, sensitivity to closure, meditations of cold her paintings publicize the feelings of the today’s world. To remind – it is the deepest, the Ninth, Dante’s circle of Inferno that is devoted to the traitors, betrayers and oathbreakers. The whole circle is not burning fire, but frozen in eternal cold. The frozen Lucifer is tearing apart Judas and the killers of Ceasar, Brutus and Cassius.

Meda’s work of present time is continually causing the wind. It means – criticising, being public, deciding and formulating on one’s own. In the Lithuanian world you cannot step into the same wind twice. The wind god Vajus [2], common for hinduists and Lithuanians, is helping birds, and not the Greek Charon to transport the dead souls into their last eternity. In the Lithuanian world it is not Dionyssus and Apollo who fight each other, and it is not Moses who announces the order, but it is the passions of the animal goddess Žvėrūna [3]  and her maids Laumės [4], and the flying of the birds that move the world.

The artist’s attempts to get free are revealed through irony, grotesque, subversive forms of objects, animals and people, marking and exhibiting our condition. The other side of the fetish passion, of the orgasmic cosmoenergy produces not only coolness but also cold. We can find it among the blue pigs that rout the rubies, and the Snowman endowed with medals (Snowman, 2014). The bucket of dishwater next to him betrays and hides the grandness of vanity. There is no orgon or fetish, all deceptive heroisms are grinded by meat grinders. Meda’s meatgrinders are the symbols of frustration, smash, finally, a bureaucratic check and the verifying spin. Wisdom exists only as a meal, when even the fetishes do not tremble (Served Wisdom, 2016). Political works of Meda are full of criticism, attempts to revolt, to separate from the condition of the grinded meat and the vanity of the snowman.

Ankstyvoji kūrėjos aukojimo tema dar liko piešiniuose, vizualinėse interpretacijose, beveik be dramos, be slapto nukrypimo.

Dar dieną gyventi be vajaus, be vėjo, bandyti paauksuotose voniose išpirkti savo sąstingį?

A RHIZOMIC MASTER-KEY

Salomėja  Jastrumskytė

Meda Norbutaitė’s painting can inspire multimedia texts and they would become independent entities, not just satellites of colourful matter. I have been looking for a key to the work of this artist for a long time yet, and not somewhere, but in a huge bundle of other keys, and they all fit perfectly. In my mind I still have the idea of Ernest Gellner about interpreting artworks – he claims they are decoded, decyphered and pecked in other sorts of ways without their authors’ having any idea of their hidden meanings. The allure of deconstruction has sagged down a bit, so I think that the non-existing, i.e. decomposed into elements author could be successfully replaced with the ‘anticipating’ author, in other words, the creating person (a person, not a mere individuum) who cannot be separated from his own emanations. Intuition as a method of thought had been victoriously discussed by Henri Bergson at the beginning of the 20th century, until he was himself pressed down under the sunset of ideas like the metaphysical cheese. Yet ideas have the inclination to wait, linger, mature slowly and return finally after having floated inertly like gauge devices at the surface of water pools. Thus, whatever strategy I would adopt for interpreting Meda’s works, it will obviously work, because the metaphor of the ‘anticipating author’ I have dropped a few lines ago may be something more substantial than just a verbal gesture. Donald Kuspit has said that an art critic is an artist as well. But that heavy bundle of keys like an awkward master-key does not give me the power to filch gracefully and elegantly from the cupboards of the semantic realms, leaving just empty shelves after. Finally I had to face the fact that the multitude, the rhizome is actually there, that they are not just dreams of Gilles Deleuze’s philosophical phantasmagories. That is why in my texts about Meda’s work I am begining to see two layers – that of reservation and that of action.

1. A leap of one image. About a decade ago wandering in the streets of Paris I came across a strange little shop. I could use the tired word of faded glamour boutique, which means a small shop of female accessories, but it was a shop of poison! That little boutique of rat poison and other relics of the noble Medieval culture of poisoning would not actually be a surprise in the mosaics of the French pettiness, detectable by smell among fromageries, chocolateries and other types of use of the live organics, if it wasn’t for its window. A huge continuous window, uncovered by a curtain or a decoration untouched for ages (for the sake of preserving the tradition) – the sophistication of the decor was more directly manifest than a most daring metaphor. The window was decorated with rats. Stretched out like anamorphoses, the bristle ridged animal bodies on vertical strings or squeezed into traps dangled along the window. The macabric decor represented the subtle ingenuity of the poison.

When one year ago I walked into Meda’s studio, the easel was occupied with a well-worked in landscape of tarts on a table. The tactilic sweetness was brimming over the relief strokes, and on the melted plane of the tablecloth loomed barely visible siluettes of rats, transparent like smoke, like predatory souls of grotesque. “Sweet Time. Rat time” – the author announced the title of the painting (which later changed into Shadows of the Sweet Time, (2016)). The romantic psychoanalysis of the ‘80s, take James Hillman, joined metaphor and reality into one stream of fantasy creation ability. Yet Meda’s inclination towards socially poetical metaphors reveals her instinctive nostalgia for opposites emanating from one another.

I will not embark on the visual analysis of the rat image – rats are abundant in the dungeons of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables and in any central heating pipeline of Vilnius. Caught and elegantly stretched a la parisien before the eyes of  the passersby they allow to experience a tremendous social nausea, that does not compare with meeting the sterile and local object of Julia Kristeva or the erotic and cosy informelle of Georges Bataille. If this picture were the vantage point for beginning a tour of Meda’s exhibition, the bright coloured extravagance and effect would fade away, and the grotesque enthropic conditions would crawl out from beyond. It is common knowledge that the Versailles did not have the sewage system until the second half of the 20th century; the problems have remained, in fact. Or the sight of a Venice embankment on a cool night, the stones immersed in the water of the bay, and the rats emerging from beyond the stones and running up the stomp of a luxurious yacth decorated in coats of arms… Just like that…

And poison (oh, very much like aesthetics) protects beauty and wealth much better than guns, while nausea opens up at the very moment when the symbols are removed like the eye-blinds. Meda’s painting Nobody (2017) begins the same talk of the carefully protected boundary between affect and enthropy. The same is meant by the organics of The Captain of Passions (2017). The crows in The Little Cage (2016) turn into stuffed rats of the poison shop window; the plucked, as if burned, dirty birds hop, staining gold and silk. The Golden Calf (2016) lies cut next to a rotting carcass. (Did not the carcass painted by Van Dyck get rotten before he finished it, like Chaim Soutine’s meat of bull that he was painting disintegrated and caused socially aesthetic trouble in a Paris villa?). Has the smell of disintegration and mumification already set in in the powder of “rat aesthetics”, the green-bluish powder that transmutes the red pulsating blood into stagnant blue (Blue Blood, (2016)? If paintings could have smell, if they were painted with scent, like the Italian futurist Carlo Cara wished in his manifesto of 1913, the royal colours of Meda’s paintings would spread aromas we tend to shelter ourselves from with fences, other scents and poison, ignoring the fact that the negation of smell produces smell, and finally the rosettes of the stained glass breathe out the smell of obelisks…

The body, life and ruby make up Meda’s triada, which travels from one painting to the next, unwinding in a serpantine of la danse macabre, in parts of a skeleton (Fragments, 2017) like a flashy end swaying on the lever, dressed extravagantly like in ancient Spanish photographs of living people posing together with the dead. The rat ouverture allows to choose seeing the finale in any symbol of Meda’s picture collection. The end is a variable, a light and portable border mark. In Meda’s paintings excess and end sound in unison and smell of the Tanacetum vulgare plant, used since the times of Ancient Egypt until the 19th century modern Europe for burying and embalmment.

2. Nostalgia of vertigo. The feeling of nostalgia is fundamental in almost all of the Western culture – it is not a turning back, aesthetic orthodoxy or apology of the Golden ages. Andrej Tarkovsky’s legendary film of the same title is full of pernicious nostalgia, equally as the popcultural Sunset saga of the American writer Stephenie Meyer. Because nostalgia is an invisible vertigo of existence, a tunnel under the sedentary humanism, trespassing of the wall after having turned into a rat or into stagnant glossy water. Metaphysical nostalgiaism.

Nostalgia swells and falls, it is powdery and multiple, yet uniting all in similarity to itself. In Meda’s paintings, it does not matter what their narrative is, looms the throat-rushing hunger of nostalgia. Such nostalgia, similarly to Martin Heidegger’s Angst (fear), is devoid of objects and cannot be exhausted by object, it hangs under existences like a void of the rift. The objects of Meda’s pictures, some of them already smelling of enthropy’s aromas, are friable surfaces of sabi glow, others, such as wine and precious stones, are not affected by time and change, and become spasmodic segments of nostalgia.

The colour creating and colour liberating painting in Western art has been swayed on the desire to move out into other realities. Whether that makes two directions of painting, or two aspects of the same, is difficult to say. When the world became overabundant in colour and all other stimulators of the senses, the painting became the liberator of colour; abstractionism, abstract expressionism, painting of the colour field and hundreds of other styles meant a real foggy nostalgiaism for the power of colour, when it was coming out of objects in the same way it was coming out of pictures, crossing them through and involving the cyclons of the Beyond. In Meda’s paintings the two streams of this strange painting existence confront each other, the border of their glow is often ironic, because open and objectified colours strike into multimeaningful ontological metaphors, when the native colours of certain objects are transferred onto other objects.

3. Nimbuses of shapes. We recognize the images, but the neighbouring images begin to push one another, throw different light or deform. Heidegger in Being and Time noted the strange upside-down relation between space and sculpture – the latter does not occupy the space, but space inhabits it. Do we regard attentively the spaces between things, realms of space, where all the possible beings are possible? The shapes of Meda’s pictures open up those spaces between things very clearly – in everyday, in its representations. Where the contour of an object is finished, a semantic tension begins – and the human imagination begins to create ghosts, surrealism, fears, as if the spaces between things would be ways for the assurance of the reality to fade out. This condition of assurance running out like liquid is exactly what can be spotted in Meda’s paintings. It is not some simulated fear, but a torn skin of assurance, showing the accidentality of everything. The spaces between things are like nimbuses of nothingness around them, and Meda is painting those nimbuses of emptiness and vanity with the extravagance of a Byzantine palette.
